The film follows a man, John, a miner who is tormented by the relationship with his father, an artist who has descended into an eroded silence. Unable to communicate with his father, John penetrates into the tunnels of a local mining shaft, encountering apparitions as he excavates stone and his own life. As the hauntings of the upper world collide with the underlands, a new passage unexpectedly forms that leads John into a strange room and towards a meeting with a figure who will show John how to die and seed a new beginning.

Mine Heart is inspired by the fairy-tale ‘Iron Hans’ by the Brothers Grimm, a myth that reflects the psyche of the masculine story as articulated by poet Robert Bly in his book for men, Iron John’. In the story, a young boy encounters the deep-rooted figure of the wild man, who is found at the bottom of a secret pool. When freed, the wild man, shows the boy the key to his own heart.
