Henry McGrath, Actor, Teacher and Theatre Director has over 8 years' experience working within theatre. He was an associate artist and principal performer at the multi-award winning Polish theatre company, Song of the Goat theatre, 2014-18. Hailed as one of Europe's most innovative training-based companies committed to researching what makes theatre distinctive to other art forms, his performances with Song of the Goat include, Songs of Lear, Portraits of the Cherry Orchard, Return to the Voice and Hamlet in the company's celebrated production, Crazy God.

 

Henry has performed and taught throughout the UK and Europe. Henry holds an MA from the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art on the innovative Theatre Lab and a BA and First-Class Honours from Manchester Metropolitan University. Henry has a vast background within the unique genre of ensemble devised, music and physical theatre through which he has developed a profound understanding of the connection between movement of the body, sound, rhythm and text.

In 2009, Henry went to study with renowned artists Nancy Spanier and Paul Oertel and since has been devoted to the process of artistic expression as transformation and to unlocking the unique powers of the performer. His work is rooted in his belief that each person offers a unique expression that can be excavated and enriched through a focused and dedicated training. He draws on the traditions of the Polish laboratory theatre, the work of Paul Oertel and his own disciplines and practice.

Henry is an associate lecturer at Plymouth Conservatoire and Manchester Metropolitan University where he leads 'Advanced Studies in Studio Practice', a unit dedicated to physical and psychophysical performance practice. He also regularly teaches at Manchester University, Bucks New University and Bolton University. Henry is one of the principal teachers at the Northern Theatre Laboratory, a training centre located in Manchester that offers the space for actors and artists to engage in a focussed and rigorous training. And he leads a unique workshop series  'Excavating Freedom' in Bristol and the South-West with the Òran Work Centre.
